Who We Are
The Independent Living Program (commonly known as ILP) is a program of Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley (FCS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
For more than 25 years, our ILP has been working to empower youth and young adults who are emerging from foster care to achieve their goals and attain self-sufficiency. Since 2009, we have been the sole provider of ILP services for current and former foster and probation involved youth living throughout Santa Clara County.
Each year, more than 600 youth and young adults participate in our comprehensive services. Our program staff members are fluent in foster care issues, connected with local services and resources, and believe profoundly in the potential of youth.
What We Do
ILP services focus on four core building blocks to self-sufficiency:
- Education: Ensure youth and young adults receive a quality education commensurate with
their abilities and aspirations.
- Employment: Connect youth and young adults with work experience and training opportunities
that provide preparation for and placement in living-wage employment and careers.
- Youth Development: Provide opportunities for youth and young adults to develop critical
thinking skills, coping skills, and healthy psycho-social development.
- Lifelong Connections: Ensure youth and young adults establish lasting connections with at least one family member or supportive adult.
To ensure youth and young adults access the full spectrum of resources available to them and receive the help they need, we collaborate with a large network of partners to link youth with safe and stable housing, legal assistance, health care, food, and other necessities. All of our services are guided by a youth-centered, strengths-based approach.
Who We Serve
Our ILP services are available to all Santa Clara County youth and young adults, ages 16 to 21, who are current and former wards and dependents of the court, including non-minor dependents.
Where We Serve
Our ILP serves youth living throughout Santa Clara County. To make services accessible to youth, we bring services directly to foster homes, group homes for foster and probation youth, school campuses, workplaces, and other convenient locations.
We also have space at the Gilroy Family Resource Center.
